Jan Eipell, 1985, born in Krkonoše, presently living in Prague
Jan Eipell, painter, born 1985, for a brief introduction; is a tough nut. Although his path as a painter, sculptor, carver, and illustrator began much earlier in life, it is now, at the age of 33 that he enters the international art scene.
Jan’s father, a sculptor, died when Jan was young. The impact these circumstances had on Jan’s future were profound. In his father’s studio, amongst his father’s tools, Jan was drawn to take up the craft of carving and blacksmithing.
At the age of 15,Jan’s illness appeared and with it a struggle that throws one off balance and pushes them to the edge of their existence. Yet within these struggles Jan gained a sharpened perspective and sense of being. Jan’s relationships are filled with excitement and anxiety, understanding and misunderstanding, hate and love. For him, his painting is a crucial rope without which a fall would follow.
In Jan’s work one can see an early sense of shape, the inspiration drawn from the work of 20th Century Czech painters, especially that of Josef Capek. Jan has found his own path in the dark and bright times of life. Jan Eipell is not the portrait of a classically trained painter, nor has he been suddenly gifted and enlightened. In the story of his work you find a naturally crafted skill, a respect of and a mastery over materials. These attributes combined with a great perception of humanity and perspective of the human experience, allow us to view the process of an honest and imperfect creator seeking perfection on canvas after canvas. If we open the closed, and in ordinary life, locked chambers of our existence we can find the perfectly managed final artistic shape of Jan Eipell’s work.
As a painter, Jan’s monumental canvases, wall paintings, and exhibitions can be found in many private collections. His creations, especially those of wood, elevate interior design to an art. Although anyone willing to look at the work of Jan Eipell can appraise the craftmanship and many hours of work, those who truly “see” his work will find, in the multilayers of oil, an unexpected depth of color and tone. Out of the complex, fluid, and living shapes of his pieces and artistic imagination, we can find that which is human. A connection that is sudden for some, gradual for others.
